Plant with hysteranthous leaves, solitary or clump forming, inflorescence up to 500 mm high. Tuber simple or compound, occasionally with stolons, very large, up to 140 mm long and 70 mm wide, pyriform to irregular in shape, vertical or horizontal; stolons up to 80 mm long and 5 mm wide; skin brown, corky, interior maroon-red, paler near the growing point, sometimes with scattered brown vescicles, the shrivelled old part of the tuber hard, brown; growing point basal to lateral with a groove for the shoot. Old leaf sheaths up to 90 mm long, about 7 mm diameter, widening near ground level to 20 mm diameter, membranous, often ending abruptly due to the leaf falling off at an abscission layer at the end of the growing season. Leaf solitary or in clumps, sub-erect to prostrate; contemporary leaf sheath exserted up to 20 mm, 2 mm diameter, dark reddish-green for the whole length, channelled, often swollen near ground level; lamina orbicular to ovate cordate, 75 mm long from apex to leaf sheath and 60 mm wide, adaxial surface green to glaucous green, abaxial surface paler often with longitudinal red bands; glabrous or with scattered soft hairs on the upper surface; margin entire, sometimes crisped. Peduncular bract barely exserted, sheathing except the top 1-2 mm, acute, reddish-green, fleshy. Peduncle 300 mm long and 1.5 mm diameter, glaucous green with some red streaking basally. Raceme lax, about 160 mm long, 75 mm wide, with up to 70 flowers. Bracts triangular, 1.5 mm long, brown, membranous, lower ones saccate. Pedicels 30-60 mm long, arcuate. Flowers triangular, up to 12 mm diameter. Tepals dimorphic, light golden yellow with white margins and apex and a green midnerve, faintly red-streaked; the outer tepals spreading, narrowly elliptic, 5 mm long and 2 mm wide, acute, the inner erect and closed around the stamens spathulate with crisped laciniate apices, 5 mm long and up to 3 mm wide. Filaments adnate to the base of the tepals, ovate, 1 mm long and wide, outer slightly wider than the inner, white, often with a few purple spots, occasionally orange; anthers yellow. Ovary globose 1.5 mm long and wide, green with slight red spotting. Style cyligdrical, 1 mm long, white. Copious nectar is produced.
