Plants with hysteranthous leaves, solitary, inflorescence up to 450 mm high. Tuber pyriform, older tubers sometimes becoming irregular and knobbly with young tubers on the side, up to 60 mm long and 20 mm wide; skin pale brown, thin, interior white; growing point basal with the shoot passing upwards in a lateral groove. Old leaf sheaths up to 70 mm long, light brown to greyish-brown, membranous. Leaf solitary, erect; contemporary leaf sheath exserted up to 30 mm, terete, 1.5 mm diameter, dark red immediately above ground level shading to glaucous green near the lamina, glabrous; lamina lanceolate, acuminate, acute when mature, up to 100 mm long and 25 mm wide, juvenile leaves almost prostrate and ovate-cordate for the first 1-3 years, glaucous green on both surfaces, glabrous; margin entire, slightly undulate. Peduncular bract exserted up to 30 mm, green to purplish-red, fleshy, puberulous, apex retrorse. Peduncle up to 300 mm long and 2.5 mm diameter, glaucous green, above paler with red markings, glabrous. Raceme densely sub-spicate, up to 150 mm long and 25 mm across, with up to 70 flowers. Bracts variable, either triangular and slightly saccate attenuate, up to 1.5 mm long, transparent, membranous with a green midnerve or very small, almost obsolete and remote from the base of the pedicel. Pedicels 2-7 mm long, patent, pale green. Flowers rotate about 12 mm diameter. Tepals equal to sub-equal, tending to be recurved in the afternoon, spathulate, up to 5.5 mm long and 3 mm wide, pale green, with a darker green midnerve and reddish streaks at the apex. Filaments erect, connivent forming a ring round the ovary, adnate to the extreme base of the tepals, lorate to spathulate, apiculate, 3 mm long and 1.5 mm wide, outer slightly narrower than inner, white; anthers yellow, introrse, versatile. Ovary ovoid, about 2 mm long and 1.5 mm wide, bright green. Style cylindrical, 1.3 mm long, white. Capsule surrounded by persistent tepals, irregularly tri-lobed, emarginate. Seeds covered with white silky hairs up to 8 mm long.
